I am a board-certified radiation oncologist. At MSK Nassau and MSK Commack, I care for people with a variety of cancers. My primary focus is on genitourinary and gynecologic cancers, as well as cancer that has spread to other parts of the body. I treat patients using external-beam radiotherapy and brachytherapy. Brachytherapy is a way to deliver high doses of radiation directly to tumors. It minimizes the radiation to nearby normal tissues, so there are fewer side effects.
Life’s path is sometimes direct but often has twists and turns along the way. My personal and professional experiences steered me to radiation oncology. I have faced health challenges myself and have family and friends who were diagnosed with cancer. These circumstances guide my daily practice as a doctor and scientific investigator.
Caring for people with cancer is a great privilege. Their courage and resilience inspire me every day. When I meet with patients for the first time to discuss their options, they are usually overwhelmed. They have encountered a flood of information, whether online or from print media, their doctors, or even family and friends. A new cancer diagnosis, or learning that the disease has returned, can really turn a person’s life upside down. Before we discuss possible treatments, the most important goal for me is to actually understand the person as a whole: What is their support system? What are the family dynamics? Who are the most important people in this person’s life? Does this person work? What does this person like to do for fun? What are their goals in life and their values? These essential pieces of information must be considered when designing a personalized treatment plan. I strive to support my patients in many ways: to cure them when possible, to offer the most-advanced therapies and available clinical trials, to minimize the adverse side effects of cancer treatment, to optimize their quality of life through palliative measures, to refer them to other healthcare professionals for additional care and assistance, and even to serve as a sympathetic listener of their frustrations, concerns, stresses, and fears. I want my patients leave the office feeling empowered and knowledgeable.
MSK’s regional sites on Long Island provide our patients with convenient access to the advanced level of cancer care that MSK is renowned for and the same clinical trials across all locations.
My clinical interest is in stereotactic body radiotherapy and brachytherapy for prostate cancer treatment. In my research, I work to understand the antitumor immune response to varying fractionated radiation regimens. I am excited about the new drugs available to treat prostate cancer. I am investigating how combining them with radiotherapy can enhance the effects. By drawing upon this knowledge, we can improve cancer outcomes while decreasing long-term side effects and preserving a person’s quality of life.
I have written several peer-reviewed articles and presented my research at numerous national meetings. I taught an undergraduate course for radiation therapists and dosimetrists, and have mentored medical students and radiation oncology residents.
In my spare time, I enjoy biking on Long Island, swimming, going to the theater, attending sporting events with my son, expanding my culinary talents, playing piano, and ballroom dancing.
Caring for people with cancer is a great privilege.
Doctors at Memorial Sloan Kettering work as teams, with specialists from all different areas. This allows us to consider all your needs together, and to give you the best possible care.
Memorial Sloan Kettering's doctors and scientists are constantly developing new treatments for cancer. MSK is typically running hundreds of clinical trials at a given time.
You may be able to participate in a clinical trial even if you are new to MSK. Search our online directory to find trial information and see more about who can participate.
Doctors and faculty members often work with pharmaceutical, device, biotechnology, and life sciences companies, and other organizations outside of MSK, to find safe and effective cancer treatments, to improve patient care, and to educate the health care community.
MSK requires doctors and faculty members to report (“disclose”) the relationships and financial interests they have with external entities. As a commitment to transparency with our community, we make that information available to the public.
Craig E. Grossman discloses the following relationships and financial interests:
