COVID-19 Vaccine Information for Patients

MSK patients age 18 and over who received 2 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine are now eligible to receive a booster shot. Patients can receive this booster dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine 6 months after their second dose.

This is based on new guidelines from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). These guidelines recommend a booster shot to boost the body’s immune response and offer extra protection for several groups of people. This includes:

  • Adults age 65 and older
  • Residents of long-term care facilities
  • Adults age 18-64 with underlying medical conditions, including cancer
  • Adults working in healthcare or other occupations putting them at high risk of contracting COVID-19

We consider our adult patients, currently in treatment or previously treated for cancer, eligible to receive the booster shot if they have received 2 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine at least 6 months ago. Learn more about the booster shot »

At this time, a booster shot is not recommended for people who received the Moderna or Johnson & Johnson/Janssen vaccine. We will keep our patients updated with any changes to these guidelines.

How to Schedule a Booster Shot

Our Pfizer-BioNTech booster vaccine supply and appointment availability are both currently limited. You do not need to wait to come to MSK for a booster shot. We encourage all eligible patients to look for a vaccination location with availability near you, using the following links:

As more booster doses become available at MSK, we will email eligible patients on a rolling basis over the next few weeks with a link to schedule a booster dose online.

Patients should review their contact information in MyMSK, our patient portal, to make sure it is up to date. Patients who do not have a MyMSK account can visit my.mskcc.org, call 646-227-2593, or call their doctor’s office for an enrollment ID. Watch this video with instructions on how to enroll.

We continue to be grateful to our patients for entrusting us with their care, and are glad that so many have received the vaccines, which offer safe and effective protection against COVID-19.
