Mission

The mission of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center’s Neurology/Neurosurgery Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Fellowship is to promote transition to practice and professional development within a comprehensive training program utilizing formalized didactics and mentored experiential learning. The aim is to prepare the APP to deliver efficient, patient-centered specialized care to the neuro-oncology population as part of a collaborative interdisciplinary healthcare team.

Vision

Our vision is to facilitate the APP’s transition to practice with a focus in Neurology and Neurosurgical Oncology within a formalized program that prepares clinicians to deliver of high quality, evidence-based patient care while supporting their professional development and leadership through participation in research, organizational committees, programs, and quality and safety processes.

Fellow Clinical Responsibilities Include

  • Elicit comprehensive patient histories
  • Perform physical examinations
  • Perform comprehensive neurologic examinations
  • Order and analyze diagnostic studies
  • Formulate and implement treatment plans
  • Evaluate response to treatment
  • Coordinate patient care
  • Participate as a member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team
  • Participate in the implementation of patient education and clinical support programs to ensure optimal care throughout the healthcare continuum

Successful completion of the APP Neurology/Neurosurgery Fellowship Program will be established by successful completion of the designated fellowship competencies, including a comprehensive evaluation and demonstration of skills.

Clinical Rotations

The program will consist of rotations in Neurology, Neurosurgery, and the Neuro Acute Care Unit. The APP Fellow will also have extended rotations with Radiation Oncology, Radiology, and the outpatient clinics

Neurology/Neurosurgery Inpatient

The Fellow will provide direct patient care, as part of a collaborative team, to the neuro-oncology patient recovering from neurosurgical procedures, receiving chemotherapy for CNS lymphoma, or requiring symptom management and treatment of an acute neurological illness as well as provide neurology and neurosurgical consultative services.

Neurology/Neurosurgery Outpatient

In the outpatient setting, the Fellow will have the opportunity to rotate through the Neurology clinic, the Neuro-Oncology clinic, and the Neurosurgery clinic. These comprehensive clinics provide outpatient care to the new patient seeking consultation, the post-operative Neurosurgery patient, established care visits for routine management, and urgent care visits including symptom management with appropriate escalation, as needed.

Neuro Acute Care Unit

The APP Fellow will have the opportunity to evaluate, manage, and implement treatment for the critically ill neuro-oncology patient within this closed unit. Care is coordinated in close collaboration with Intensivists, the Neurology Attending, and the Neurosurgery Attending to provide comprehensive neurocritical care to patients.

12 months

1 per year, starting June/July 2020

Eligibility

  • Adult Acute Care Nurse Practitioners
  • Adult – Geriatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioners
  • Physician Assistants
  • Current New York State RN and NP licenses, or PA license and appropriate NP/PA board certification. All applicants must be graduates of accredited United States University programs.
