The Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care offers a one year clinical fellowship dedicated to patient care and education with the opportunity for a second year focusing on basic/translational research.  Our fellowship provides rich educational opportunities in an academic medical center dedicated to both patient care and cancer research.  Candidates who have successfully completed their residency program and are board-eligible or are board certified are eligible.

With the number of annual anesthetics exceeding 40,000, this fellowship provides superior training to the next generation, while advancing standards of care for people with cancer throughout the world.  Trainees will gain expertise in the perioperative care of the cancer patient. The fellow may administer anesthesia under the direct supervision of an attending physician or in a supervisory role of a housestaff officer with an overseeing attending.  Elective time is offered according to the trainee’s interest. Potential electives include:

  • Advances in Acute and Chronic Pain in the Cancer Patient
  • Advanced Airway Management in Thoracic and/or Head and Neck Surgery
  • Management of the Pediatric Oncology Patient
  • Perioperative Transthoracic Echo (TTE)/Transesophageal Echo (TEE) Experience
  • Palliative Care and/or an Intensive Care rotation

In addition, the fellow will have one non-clinical day a week for clinical research with the goal of presenting at national meetings and eventual publication of work in peer-reviewed journals.  Educational activities include journal club, M&M, lectures and courses in introductory biostatistics. The fellowship is designed to prepare the physician to care for the complex cancer patient while engaging in innovative research in perioperative cancer care. The fellowship trains a new generation of physician leaders in perioperative cancer care by equipping them with the knowledge, management and leadership skills to face a multitude of challenges in the cancer patient.
