The Straumann Maxillofacial Dental Implantology Research Fellowship is a one-year non-clinical research program that provides opportunities for training and research experience as it relates to dental implantology in oncology.  The utilization of dental implants within the oncology patient population has obvious benefits, but additional research is needed to clarify the workflows necessary to integrate dental implants into the oncology workflow.  These workflow issues include, and are not limited to, the time at which dental implants should be placed in respect to other oncology treatments, the effect of dental implants on oncology imaging and other oncology interventions, and the utilization of digital technology for dental implant planning and placement in head and neck surgical sites.  This fellowship aims to further trainees knowledge in implantology in the oncology patient population and assist in developing and completing research aimed at addressing the aforementioned needs.  There is a great opportunity to improve the quality of life of the oncology patient population with the utilization of dental implants but trained experts and quality research is required to facilitate this goal.  The 1-year fellowship in Maxillofacial Dental Implantology Research is based within the Dental Service in the Department of Surgery at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, New York.

The Straumann Maxillofacial Dental Implantology Research Fellow will participate in all didactic activities of the Dental Service which includes Surgical Grand Rounds, Dental Service Seminar, Journal Club, and Multi-disciplinary Tumor Board.  Additionally, the Fellow will attend the Summer Research Course, which is mandatory for Fellows at MSK.  This course provides the necessary background in research design, biostatistics, and research workflow for fellows to be effective research participants at MSK.  Fellows are also expected to participate in and facilitate ongoing research efforts of the Dental Service as well as contribute to grant writing efforts.  By the end of the fellowship, research fellows will have conducted research projects, prepared abstracts and manuscripts, and served as first author of a manuscript and second author on several others.
