Program Overview

SEP Phase I: Cancer Biology, Lab Instruction, and Professional Development (80 hours coursework and career development, 40 hours homework, and 40 hours professional development over 10 months).

SEP Phase II, Research Apprenticeship (300 hours one-on-one mentorship over eight weeks): Each student embarks upon an apprenticeship in a laboratory or clinical research setting with an MSK faculty member. Each student presents their findings to the Human Oncology and Pathogenesis Program at the end of the apprenticeship.

Phase I: Didactic Lectures and Coursework

  • Learn scientific principles and the process of scientific inquiry

Responsible Conduct of Research
  • Learn underlying principles of data acquisition, sharing, management, and ownership
  • Learn about principles underlying human and animal research
  • Recognize what qualifies as research misconduct
Human Participants Research Module
  • Recognize ethical violations in human subject research
  • Learn about the ethical principles that govern research with human participants
  • Identify governmental protections in place for research involving human participants
Professional Development Courses
  • Understand principles key to professional presentation
  • Learn methods of professional networking
  • Learn principles key to professional writing and communication
Cancer Biology Courses
  • Broaden knowledge in cancer and current biological research with basic science courses in cell cycle, liquid tumors, cancer genetics and pathology, cancer genomics, oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes, targeted therapies, immunology, and immunotherapies
  • Comprehend the biological capacities acquired during the multistep development of human tumors
  • Develop an insight into how these cancer hallmarks impact the development of novel therapeutics and clinical treatments in the emerging era of personalized medicine
Phase II: Internship
Research TrackImplementation of “Basic Laboratory Skills Training” and “Cancer Biology Courses” to craft a scientific hypothesis and experimentally interrogate the hypothesis in a cancer biology lab or clinical research setting.
Mentor MeetingsAs needed (minimum of once weekly) meetings with a research scientist during the conduction of the research internship for guidance in the application of scientific principles and methodology.
Journal Clubs
  • Participation with an update of cancer biology literature
  • Critical appraisal of scientific literature
  • Understand concepts of study design, statistical significance, and scientific methodology
SEP Peer-to-Peer PartnershipEnable students to build a professional network among peers outside of their individual schools and demographic.

Internship

Each participant in the HOPP Science Enrichment Program is assigned to an eight-week biomedical or computational lab-based internship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Students are paired with a mentor who supervises their activities and helps them develop appropriate skills. Over the course of the internship, students complete a self-directed project that provides value to their mentor and/or a principal investigator’s overall research objectives.
