Medical oncologist Howard Scher of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center says that men with advanced (metastatic) prostate cancer have more effective treatment options than ever before. Since 2004, the FDA has approved several new drugs that address individual features of a man’s disease and prolong survival. These include two new chemotherapy drugs (Taxotere® and Jevtana®), an immune therapy (Provenge®), and a drug that prevents prostate cancer from spreading to the bone (Xgeva®). Researchers at Memorial Sloan Kettering also helped to develop a new hormone therapy (Zytiga™), which prevents cancer cells from making their own testosterone and fueling tumor growth.
