Full Title
Assessing Adipose Tissue and Metabolic Profiles of Childhood Cancer Survivors after Radiation Therapy: A Pilot StudyPurpose
People who had treatment for childhood cancers are more likely to develop diabetes, weight gain, and other metabolic abnormalities as adults. Researchers in this study are seeking to learn about the biology of these metabolic late effects.
They suspect that body fat exposed to radiation during cancer treatment remains biologically different from body fat not exposed to radiation, and they want to explore this hypothesis in this study. If there are differences in exposed versus unexposed body fat, they will explore how those differences might play a role in the development of metabolic disorders such as high blood sugar.
The study involves one visit in which participants provide a blood sample and body measurements and have a biopsy of fat tissue. Compensation will be provided.
Eligibility
Participants in this study will include adults (age 18 and older) who were treated with abdominal or total body radiation for a childhood cancer at least 2 years before entering the study. Adults treated with chemotherapy alone are also eligible to participate as comparisons.
