Mary Jane Massie has been appointed by Governor David A. Paterson to be Chair and Member of the New York State Council on Graduate Medical Education.
Dr. Massie has been Chair of Memorial Hospital’s Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC) since 1995 and a member since 1982. The GMEC oversees the training of more than 1,500 residents and fellows in 70 different clinical programs and is responsible for establishing and implementing policies and procedures regarding the quality of their education and their work environment. In addition to her work with the GMEC, Dr. Massie is a psycho-oncologist whose clinical practice is focused on women and men with breast cancer. Throughout her career she has been active in the educational activities of many professional organizations including the American Psychiatric Association and the American College of Psychiatrists.
The New York State Council is a 30-member advisory body that provides advice to the Governor and Commissioner of Health on the formulation and implementation of state policies relating to graduate medical education and training. The work of the council focuses on primary care training and practice, consortia development, minority participation in graduate medical education, and healthcare reform/managed care.
