Breakthrough findings were presented at the 2022 ASCO Annual Meeting and published in The New England Journal of Medicine today by researchers at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) confirming a clinical complete response in all 14 patients who received the immunotherapy treatment dostarlimab as a first-line treatment for mismatch repair-deficient (MMRd) locally advanced rectal cancer. This new approach of “immunoablative” therapy uses immunotherapy to replace surgery, chemotherapy and radiation to remove cancer.

A new vaccine using the same mRNA technology as the Pfizer jab against COVID-19 could be a breakthrough in the fight against pancreatic cancer. In a promising early study conducted by German company BioNTech — which partnered with Pfizer to develop the lifesaving COVID shot — half of the patients remained cancer-free 18 months after having their tumors removed and receiving the jabs. MSK’s Vinod Balachandran is featured.

A small clinical trial conducted by Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center found that every single rectal cancer patient who received an experimental immunotherapy treatment had their cancer go into remission.  MSK’s Luis Diaz Jr. and Andrea Cercek are featured.

On Feb 2, 2022, President Joe Biden announced plans to relaunch the Cancer Moonshot initiative as part of his ongoing determination to “end cancer as we know it” in the USA. Around 100 cancer researchers, patients, and advocates gathered at the White House to hear the president’s address, in which he renewed his pledge to improve the experience of those living with cancer. The news was accompanied by a call to action by the President and First Lady Jill Biden on cancer screenings, which have fallen behind as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, with the hope that the growing backlog can be urgently addressed. MSK’s Lisa DeAngelis is quoted.
