Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) announces the following awards and appointments:
MSK Receives National Cancer Institute (NCI) Specialized Programs of Research Excellence (SPORE) Grant
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) awarded MSK with a prestigious Specialized Programs of Research Excellence (SPORE) grant for leukemia research. MSK’s efforts conducted under this grant will focus on acute myeloid leukemia (AML) research. Omar Abdel-Wahab, MD, Director, Center for Hematologic Malignancies, and Martin Tallman, MD, Chief, Leukemia Service, are co-principal investigators for the new initiative.
The SPORE grant will allow researchers to leverage collective efforts to develop effective targeted therapies and immunotherapeutic approaches for several molecular subtypes of AML, including some that currently lack therapeutic options. For more information visit here.
Forbes Names MSK a Top Employer in New York State
Forbes named MSK one of America’s Best-In-State Employers in 2021. MSK ranked #15 across all companies and industries in New York State and #2 in the New York State Healthcare & Social Industry.
To conduct this ranking, Forbes partnered with market research firm Statista to compile the list after surveying 80,000 U.S. employees across 25 industries. They collected direct and indirect recommendations from employees and asked about all aspects of their experience, including working conditions, salary, growth opportunities, and diversity.

Lee Jones Named Member of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Cancer Prevention Working Group Steering Committee
Lee Jones, PhD, Program Director, Exercise Oncology Service, has been named a member of the AACR Cancer Prevention Working Group (CPWG) Steering Committee.
The mission of the CPWG is to establish cancer prevention as a global priority through innovative science, integration of the latest technologies, improved levels of funding, and delivery of effective public education and awareness strategies.
Mark Ptashne Receives 2021 Honorary Doctor of Science Degree from Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory School of Biological Sciences
Mark Ptashne, PhD, Member, Ludwig Chair of Molecular Biology, received a 2021 Honorary Doctor of Science Degree from the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) School of Biological Sciences. Dr. Ptashne was one of only two recipients to receive the CSHL Honorary Doctor of Science Degree in 2021.

Laura Ardizzone, DNP, CRNA, DCC, Director, Nurse Anesthesia Services, was selected a fellow of the American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology (AANA). Fellows of the AANA are proven leaders in the nurse anesthesia profession, dedicated to the advancement of clinical practice, education, research, and professional advocacy consistent with the high standards of the AANA.
Yolanda Bryce Awarded Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine (SIDM) Diagnostic Quality Improvement (DxQI) Seed Grant
Yolanda Bryce, MD, Director, Interventional Radiology Training Program, was awarded a 2021 DxQI Seed Grant from the Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine (SIDM) to test interventions that can improve the quality, accuracy, and timeliness of diagnosis. Dr. Bryce will focus her project on improving timely diagnosis of acute limb ischemia.
The SIDM catalyzes and leads change to improve diagnosis and eliminate harm from diagnostic error. The DxQI Seed Grant Program is an initiative of the SIDM with support from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.
Junior Arturo Gonzales–Arevalo Awarded the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) MOSAIC Program Grant
Junior Arturo Gonzales–Arevalo, PhD, Research Associate in the Thomas Reiner Lab, was named a new scholar in the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) inaugural cohort for the Maximizing Opportunities for Scientific and Academic Independent Careers (MOSAIC) Program.
The MOSAIC program is part of NIH’s efforts to enhance diversity within the academic biomedical research workforce and is designed to facilitate the transition of promising postdoctoral researchers from diverse backgrounds.
